psychobob:
I am glad you were able to get your system back to a usable state.

Spybot: Search & Destroy is a good program. It just so happens that you were using an older version with a less developed update scheme/system. The new version fixes this, and the creator of Spybot is no longer serving updates to older versions of Spybot, which is one of the things that can cause this issue.

Please see my notice on the first page of this guide in purple text as to how to stop this issue from happening again.

THANK YOU! I spend hours and hours trying to fix this problem. I followed your directions to the tee and it worked first time. As soon as I got logged in, I uninstalled Spybot. It has never found anything on my computer (other than cookies) and has caused two MAJOR system failures.

ticiano:
Does it happen right after you log in, or at another point?

Keep hitting F8 before you see the Windows flag during bootup to be brought to a menu. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select Safe Mode and push Enter.

To set it so the computer doesn't automatically restart when you see a blue screen:
1) Open up the Control Panel
2) Go to System
(You can also get here by right-clicking on My Computer and going to Properties)
3) Click on the Advanced tab
4) Click on the third Settings button (under Startup and Recovery)
5) Uncheck the Automatically restart checkbox.
6) Click OK on the remaining windows to close them.

The next time your computer crashes, you'll be able to see the blue screen and give me more information.

THANK YOU!!!!! This worked (copying the userinit.exe file) and has saved me losing all work on hard drive. None of the other methods online seemed to have helped (including the ones you linked to). Great instructions for a technophobe like me. 10/10

I got the logon/logoff problem and I am doing the suggested solution -link from lisa. But I'm having a problem: i got to the second step in method #2 but when i hit enter to confirm the windows/system32/config all that happens is that it says: EXPAND [Ww] [Ii] [Nn] etc (it spells out windows/system32/config)
what do i do now? tia (very much!!)
